Brownsville Moving Experts

Brownsville is a residential Brooklyn enclave with a quintessentially NYC history, look, feel, and charm.

Located in Brooklyn’s northeast, Brownsville’s roughly 1.2 sq miles are a flat grid of around 100 city blocks. It’s bordered — from the south, clockwise — by Canarsie, East Flatbush, Crown Heights, Bedford–Stuyvesant, Cypress Hills, and East New York (Brooklyn’s most Eastern neighborhood).

And Oz Moving & Storage’s moving trucks cover all of the above. But we’re not just reliable local movers providing daily quality moving services for our fellow New Yorkers. With moving experience spanning millennia, we also specialize in long-distance moving, residential moving, office moves, and more.

So whether you need a full-service move, packing services, storage services, or just some help with the heavy lifting — we can help with every step of the moving process. So reach (or get a free quote) today and see for yourself why Oz is your go-to Brownsville moving company. And now here’s a glimpse of Brownsville itself.

Brownsville Moving Tips

Brownsville is named after Charles S. Brown who — back in 1865 — built the first 250 homes on this then-farmland. In the early 1900s, Brownsville was coined the “Jerusalem of Brooklyn” due to its predominantly Jewish population. By the 1930s, it was Brooklyn’s most densely populated neighborhood. And in the 1950s, it saw a large influx of African Americans.

Like many NYC neighborhoods, Brownsville has also struggled with poverty and crime over the decades. Today, however, it boasts a rich cultural, community-oriented, and family-friendly way of life — while lacking some of the drawbacks of its more gentrified distant Brooklyn neighbors.

Who Lives in Brownsville?

A quarter million New Yorkers from all walks of life inhabit Brownsville’s high-rises and brownstones. Of these — according to NYU’s Furman Center — African Americans are the majority, Hispanics make up about 20%, and around 5% identify as Asian and white. Many residents are foreign-born, and the average median household income in 2021 was around $40,000, 44% less than the NYC average.

Cost of living in Brownsville

So for the nation’s most expensive city, Brownsville is still relatively affordable. For example, the average rent for a one-bedroom in 2022 was $1,800/month — less than half of the overall Brooklyn average. In other words, you could cover all your bases (rent, groceries, bills, etc.) for around $3,000/month.

What is There to do in Brownsville

Brownsville doesn’t necessarily have all the hype and buzz of its bigger-name Brooklyn neighbors like Bushwick and Williamsburg. Nevertheless, it’s an authentically NYC locale with plenty of character — and plenty to offer.

Learn its history at the Brownsville Heritage House. Shoot some hoops and take a workshop at Betsy Head Park and the Brownsville Recreation Center. Grab some Chinese food at Hardee’s. And end your day with a flick at the historical Pitkin Theater (both a former church and vaudeville theater). It doesn’t really get more quintessentially NYC than that.
